This year, Leonard became a columnist for the Chinese monthly Meng (or “Dream”). Spurred on
by the hope that China’s rising generation will play an important role on the world stage, China’s
burgeoning middle-class has embraced childhood literacy as an essential skill and turned to
Western picture books (both in English and in translation) as a treasured resource. Leonard
writes each month about the American illustrators who in some cases have become as well
known in China as they are in the US, and about children’s-book focused American museums,
libraries, and other sites of interest to visiting Chinese families.
