In this lively illustrated program, Leonard shares his thoughts about the special challenge of writing in a fresh and illuminating way about one of American history’s most iconic figures, Abraham Lincoln and takes the well-known photo of Lincoln reading to his son Tad as the jumping-off point for an eye-opening look at the sixteenth president’s fascination with new technologies, his genius for communicating by word and image; and his stubborn resolve to be a good father not only to his own children but also to the people of a divided nation.

In this illustrated talk coinciding with the CMA’s exhibition, “Wild Things Are Happening,” Leonard will draw on his wide-ranging knowledge of children’s book history and his 20-year-long friendship with Maurice Sendak to show how the creator of Where the Wild Things Are changed children’s books–and our understanding of childhood–forever.
